Missing the Mark

What is missing the mark? The Greek word hamartia (ἁμαρτία) is usually translated as sin in the New Testament. In Classical Greek, it means "to miss the mark" or "to miss the target" which was also used in Old English archery. If an archer misses the target, the word "sin" was yelled out.

In context, this is the same for our lives. Many times, what we believe is good (with our own good intentions and our own wisdom), is not necessary good in God's standard. Therefore we miss the mark and we have sinned. The following diagrams below show the reason for the separation between us and God.

Separation from God

Separation from God
God created us in His own image to have an abundant life. He loves us and created us to enjoy a personal relationship with Him. But we have failed to do this, by choosing to go our own way. We show this independence by being hostile or apathetic towards God. Like a parent, God (the Father) gave His children the freedom of choice, hoping for His children to love and obey Him.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

Our Attempts

Our Attempts
Mankind is trying to bridge this gap in an attempt to find security and satisfaction through things such as wealth, good works, religion, philosophy or morality. However, all attempts will eventually fail because they do not deal with the problem of sin. For the wages of sin is death Romans 6:23.

There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death.
Proverbs 14:12

But your iniquities have separated you from God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.
Isaiah 59:2

God's Remedy

God's Remedy: The Cross
Jesus Christ is the only answer to this problem. He died on the Cross and rose from the grave, paying the penalty for our sin and bridging the gap between God and people.

God is on one side and the people on the other side, and Christ Jesus, Himself man, is between them to bring them together.
1 Timothy 2:5

For Christ has also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.
1 Peter 3:18

But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

God's Invitation

God's Invitation
When God invites, we must each respond by placing our trust in Him as our Saviour and Lord. Then we can begin our journey to know God personally.

This response involves: Agreeing with God that we are sinful and deciding to turn from our sin (Repentance). Acts 2:26-28

Trusting Christ to forgive us completely because He died for our sins. (Faith). Romans 10:9-10

The relationship is a gift from God and begins when we put our trust in Christ. The relationship is personal and it is not a religionist ritual (not doing special ritual). You can place your trust in Jesus Christ by expressing your faith through prayer. (Prayer is simpy talking to God). Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
