Shakespeare famously wrote in “Romeo and Juliet” the line “What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Nonetheless, in the Word of God, there’s much contained in the names that God gives. There are three principal characters in the Bible from which Israel derived her identity and name – Abraham, Jacob and Judah. Abraham is the father of the nation; Jacob obtained the name Israel; and from Judah, we get the word “Jews”. As believers, these are names from which we obtain our identities as well for we’ve been grafted into the commonwealth of Israel. In understanding what’s in these names, we can understanding better the identity that God has stored up for us.
