The Unfinished Task
Much has been written about the unprecedented changes in 2020–2021. Yet, through the history of time and birth of civilisations, we see that God’s plans and purposes always prevail (Isaiah 14:24), despite the circumstances.
Revelation 19:10 ‘…Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.’
Throughout 2019 to 2021, we see the faithfulness, goodness, and sovereignty of God over Cornerstone in the nations. As we look ahead, we are believing and declaring for greater things to come in His Kingdom!
In 2019, the work of Cornerstone Missions was firing on all cylinders, with continued expansion of our Cornerstone Global Network (CGN) into new nations, and a very fruitful missions mobilisation calendar with over 70 ministry, Couriers and Builder teams serving our CGN ministries and friends in the nations. But as 2020 approached, borders were slammed shut and all our lives were disrupted in unprecedented ways.
Yet, the move of the Gospel continues unhindered into new terrains, through creative new ways. Albert Einstein once said, “In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.” We saw this to be true in many of our CGN churches and ministries. Many of our worship services, trainings, ministries, and discipleship across various languages went digital with the fresh Word of God, reaching thousands of previously unreached families and communities across many nations, including closed and remote regions.
Over 2020 into 2021, our leaders rose up by the grace of God, mobilised our people locally and in the nations, to serve and display God’s generous love to their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We witnessed God bring much fruit–salvation of souls and strengthening of His people, across many of our churches in the nations. Over the past 3 years, 5 new nations were added to our CGN family through new Cornerstone church plants and ministry adoptions in Asia (Japan, Sri Lanka), Europe (Netherlands, Spain) and for the first time, Central America (Guatemala). Just like the Bible College of Wales, which was our landing point into the United Kingdom, we believe that God is giving us strategic beachheads for greater Kingdom work to come, especially in continental Europe and Latin America.
Truly, as the psalmist proclaimed, “The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; yes I have a good inheritance” (Psalm 16:6). Through this report and the testimonies featured, our hearts yearn to glorify the Lord and give thanks for all He has done through the years.
Looking ahead, I believe that a new season is dawning upon Cornerstone Missions. At the start of 2021, I received a prophetic word from a dear friend of mine, Chris Berglund, on God’s three ‘15’s for the house of Cornerstone — Psalm 15, John 15, and Romans 15. Psalm 15 and John 15 are mirroring chapters in the Old and New Testament, extolling believers to abide in the presence of God. Out from this place of abiding comes forth God’s apostolic and missional call into the nations, which is the heart of Romans 15; for His Name to bedeclared and praised amongst all Gentiles. Paul emphasised his God-given missional strategy — ‘I have made it my aim to preach the Gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation’ (Romans 15:20).
I believe that God is raising and sending a new missional wave from Cornerstone into new terrains; to proclaim the Gospel amongst unengaged, unreached people groups (UPG), who will disciple the un-discipled, and play our part in finishing the unfinished task.
To date, the Joshua Project estimates that there are still 7,402 UPG’s, representing 3.28 billion people. 41% of our world’s population have yet to hear the wonderful Gospel of Jesus or have less than 5% professing Christians within their communities. Considering the digital age we are in, with unparalleled inter-connectedness across the nations, the extent of this unfinished task is staggering. Yet, we know that with God, nothing is impossible. Jesus has foretold that ‘this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come’ (Matthew 24:14), ushering His return. The unfinished task will be finished, and we need to do our part to evangelise the world.
As we look forward, may our people be emboldened by the Holy Spirit, to go forth into the nations, carrying the Gospel to every creature and every tongue, for worship of all nations to be rightfully restored to our Lord Jesus Christ. ‘All the nations You have made will come and worship before You, O Lord; they will bring glory to Your Name’ (Psalm 86:9).
