The standard Jesus set for us in the Scriptures is nothing less than perfection. He said, “BE ye perfect”. He did not say, “TRY to be perfect”. In fact, Jesus never told us to try to do anything. He said, “BE holy”; and not “TRY to be holy”. He said, “LOVE your enemies”; not “TRY to love your enemies”. Why? Because if we try, we’ll always fall short. I’ve tried to be holy, I’ve tried to pray. I’ve tried to love those who gave me a hard time, and I’ve failed time and again. If we were to depend on our own strength or abilities, trust me, we’ll always miss the mark of God’s standards. That’s why all the requirements in the New Testament are based on one word – GRACE!
